I started Rosetta Stone Italian level 1 on October 10, 2013 and finished it on October 23. I didn’t study every day, but that was a total of 10 days of study.

 WHAT YOU WILL LEARN IN LEVEL 1

- Greetings;

- Introductions;

- Talk in simple words about family, study and work;

- Talk about your house;

- Describe simple actions and verbal conjugations in the present;

- Describe and compare with simple words people, things and animals;

- Go shopping;

- Ask for directions;

- Colors, numbers, days of the week, seasons of the year;

- Talk about meals in a simple way;

- Say what you need, like or want...

Basically that’s it I guess.

PRACTICAL RESULTS OF MY STUDY

What everyone wants to know: HOW MUCH WILL I LEARN WITH ROSETTA STONE? WILL I REALLY SPEAK THE LANGUAGE?

Well, it’s still hard for me to give a verdict after completing only one level. But now I can say I know at least some basic Italian. I developed all the skills I listed above, but of course in a very precarious way. I wouldn’t be able to interact much with a native speaker, but I can automatically understand virtually all the sentences in level 1. If I went to Italy today, I would at least have enough language knowledge to handle simple situations on the street, restaurants, stores and hotels. I do make a lot of mistakes, mainly with the forms of the demonstratives, plurals, articles, prepositions, etc. About the method, I think this happens due to the lack of explicit grammar explanation, even so I don’t intend to search for explanation in other material right now. I will venture in the next levels and see if I can improve that intuitively, following the proposition of the method.

CONCLUSION

I could handle a very simple interaction with someone but making a lot of mistakes. In general terms, I feel I haven’t learned so much (let's wait... that was just one level, 25 hours of study... that’s just a start).

Comecei a estudar o curso de Italiano nível 1 do Rosetta Stone no dia 10 de outubro de 2013 e terminei no dia 23/10. Não estudei todos os dias, mas no total foram 10 dias de estudo.

O QUE SE APRENDE NO NÍVEL 1

- Cumprimentar;

- Apresentar-se;

- Falar com palavras simples sobre família, estudo e trabalho;

- Falar sobre sua casa;

- Descrever ações simples com conjugação verbal no presente;

- Descrever e comparar de forma simples pessoas, coisas e animais;

- Fazer compras;

- Pedir informação na rua;

- Cores, números, dias da semana, estações do ano;

- Falar sobre refeições de forma simples;

- Falar sobre o que precisa, o que gosta e o que deseja.

Acho que basicamente é isso...

RESULTADOS PRÁTICOS DO MEU ESTUDO

O que todos querem saber: O QUANTO VOU APRENDER COM O ROSETTA STONE? VOU CONSEGUIR MESMO FALAR A LÍNGUA?

Bem, ainda é difícil eu dar um veredito completando apenas o nível 1, mas posso dizer que agora sei pelo menos o básico do Italiano. Desenvolvi todas as habilidades que listei acima, mas claro que de forma bem precária. Eu não ia conseguir interagir muito com um falante nativo, mas entendo automaticamente todas as frases do nível 1. Se eu fosse para a Itália hoje, iria ao menos me virar com frases bem simples na rua, restaurantes, lojas e hotel. Cometo vários erros, principalmente com as formas dos demonstrativos, plural, artigos, preposições, etc. Sobre o método, realmente acho que cometo esses erros devido a ausência de explicação gramatical explícita, mesmo assim não pretendo procurar explicações gramaticais agora em outro material. Vou me aventurar nos próximos níveis e ver se consigo melhorar isso intuitivamente conforme a proposta do método. 

CONCLUSÃO

Eu poderia interagir com alguém de forma bem simples e cometendo vários erros. No geral sinto que não aprendi muito (temos que esperar... foi apenas um nível, 25 horas de estudo... é apenas uma introdução).

After a brief search in youtube, you'll find a bunch of people trumpeting to everyone how much they felt stupid and frustrated for buying this useless, confusing and ineffective program called Rosetta Stone. They say it doesn't work, you won't learn much and it's a waste of time and money. On the other hand, you'll also find people praising it and considering it a state-of-the-art language program, it's the fastest way to learn a language and some even say it's the best thing they've seen in language learning ever. In spite of all these lovers and haters, no doubt this is one of the most famous language programs out there (haters say this is due to all the heavy advertisement the company makes).  

In the middle of such opposing views, for all practical purposes what really matters is:

CAN YOU REALLY LEARN A LANGUAGE WITH ROSETTA STONE? 

I accept this challenge and will try to learn something with it. My challenge is to speak fluent Italian in the shortest time possible.  I have never studied Italian before. I'll try to study as much as I can and as fast as I can, but not like a mad man. Unfortunately I can't afford to stop everything else just to study... but I can set aside from two to three hours a day - that is humanly possible and not so tiring, it's a time any average person (perhaps someone like you) can afford to spend with a little organization.

Now I'm trying to organize my time to make a serious commitment to learning Italian. So I thought it might be interesting to share some information about my experience with people.  This is the kind of information I've always looked for and about which I've been curious to know but few people share it. And  when we do find some information and testimonials about Rosetta Stone they express nothing but very personal opinions and personal tastes, and most negative views come from people who have gone through a few lessons and soon gave up (they claim it's too boring, confusing and ineffective to continue)... most of those views are far from practical. I'd like to hear someone who has finished all levels say: ROSETTA STONE REALLY DOESN'T WORK! That could be me in the future! I'll try to go through all levels, and if the results are not satisfactory, I'll sure tell you.

So the purpose of this blog is to show PRACTICAL RESULTS and serve as a simple and honest study report and share my experience with other people that are interested in learning languages (I say honest because my interest is not to defend or attack the method according to my personal likes and dislikes, and I didn't create this blog to boast about how smart I am in learning languages and then show off to people - my interest is to report real results and sincerely share that with those who are interested and are considering whether to study with Rosetta Stone or not). It's also a way to encourage myself to reach my goal and perhaps encourage other people to study.

Depois de uma breve pesquisa no youtube, você vai encontrar várias pessoas alertando a todos o quanto elas se sentiram estúpidas e frustradas por comprar esse programa inútil, confuso e ineficiente que se chama Rosetta Stone. Para elas o programa não funciona, você não vai aprender muito e é um desperdício de tempo e dinheiro. Por outro lado, você também vai encontrar elogios e pessoas dizendo que é a forma mais rápida de se aprender uma língua, um dos melhores programas de aprendizagem de línguas que elas já viram. Apesar de tantos opositores e defensores, não resta dúvidas de que o Rosetta Stone é um dos programas de aprendizagem de línguas mais famosos que existe (os opositores dizem que isso é resultado de pura estratégia de marketing). 

Em meio a reações tão opostas, o que realmente importa na prática é:

É POSSÍVEL APRENDER UMA LÍNGUA COM O ROSETTA STONE? 

Eu aceito o desafio e vou experimentar o programa. Meu desafio será falar Italiano fluente no menor tempo possível. Eu nunca estudei italiano antes. Tentarei estudar o máximo que eu puder, mas não como um louco desvairado. Infelizmente não posso parar minha vida só para estudar, mas consigo reservar de duas a três horas por dia -  humanamente possível e não tão cansativo, um tempo que qualquer pessoa (talvez você mesmo) pode reservar com um pouco de organização.

Agora que estou procurando levar a sério o estudo do Italiano pelo Rosetta Stone, achei que seria interessante compartilhar alguma informação sobre minha experiência com outras pessoas. Esse é o tipo de informação que eu sempre procurei e sempre tive curiosidade de saber, mas poucos disponibilizam. E quando finalmente achamos informações e depoimentos sobre o programa, na maioria das vezes expressam nada mais do que afinidades, opiniões e gostos pessoais... e a maioria das opiniões negativas vêm de pessoas que fizeram algumas poucas lições e logo desistiram sem ao menos tentar obter mais resultados (elas dizem que o programa é muito chato, confuso e ineficiente)... muitas dessas opiniões não possuem valor prático. Eu gostaria de ouvir alguém que terminou todos os níveis dizer: O ROSETTA STONE REALMENTE NÃO FUNCIONA! Quem sabe esse seja eu no futuro? Eu tentarei fazer todos os níveis e se os resultados por acaso forem insatisfatórios, eu certamente irei relatar aqui.

Então o objetivo deste blog é mostrar RESULTADOS PRÁTICOS e servir como um relatório de estudos simples e honesto e compartilhar minha experiência com outras pessoas que estão interessadas em aprender línguas (digo honesto porque não entrarei no mérito de fazer uma análise linguística defendendo ou atacando o método conforme minhas afinidades, nem criei este blog pra ostentar o quanto sou talentoso em aprender línguas - meu interesse é relatar resultados reais e compartilhar isso com pessoas que buscam essa informação e estão considerando se irão estudar pelo Rosetta Stone ou não). É também uma forma de eu mesmo me incentivar a alcançar meu objetivo e quem sabe incentivar outras pessoas a estudar.
